Belize’s Watersheds

World Water Day has been celebrated every year on March 22 since 1993. This year’s theme is Wastewater. In Belize, the World Water Day committee is hosting a forum and fair from 9am to 3pm at the Ramada Princess Hotel. Leading up to this event, there was a jingle competition, poetry open mic night and a four-week radio trivia challenge to create awareness. Even though Belize has 18 major watersheds, we still need to be very aware of the amount of water we use in our daily lives.

View the Story Map from the University of Belize’s Natural Resources Management Program to learn about the watershed nearest to you and begin to think about how you can play a role in conserving water. Share ways how you plan to reduce and re-use water.

Although Belize has 18 major watersheds, planning for the future is very important. The threat of losing our water resources is very real due to factors such as climate change, spatial distribution of human population and increase of land use.
