Belize Celebrates World GIS Day 2012

World GIS Day EXPO 2012

With the great success of the 1st Annual World GIS Day last year, Total Business Solutions Ltd, the official Esri distributor in Belize, in collaboration with Esri Inc, and Belize Telemedia Ltd once again hosted World GIS Day Expo on Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at the Princess Hotel in Belize City

Students of all ages and other attendees were all invited to share under the theme of “Discovering the World through GIS”. The Expo was primarily geared towards informing and educating students on the impact GIS is making in different industries in Belize and daily activities on a whole.

The students, being the primary audience were immersed with various GIS themed games and activities. From a GeoDart board to a Belize-customized GIS Jeopardy Game, students were able to build their geography knowledge and skills while playing interactive games. The GIS Day themed prizes were an added bonus to the fun and excitement.

Attendees learned the basics of GIS, the technology and equipment involved and how GIS aids in our everyday activities, careers and industries. Each booth aided in educating guests on how their organization utilizes GIS technology to solve problems and achieve strategic objectives.

This year’s Expo had a record attendance and was highly received and enjoyed by all who attended and participated. Students left the Expo with GIS‐Day themed school supplies and treats. A GIS Day Cake raffle [donated by Cakes by Karla] was a main attraction at the Expo and was won by St. Martin De Porres Primary School.
